Kid-Approved Columbus Day Videos & a FREEBIE!

September is here and one of the first holidays that most schools across the country celebrate is Friday, September 16, 2016. It is Constitution Day! Let's be honest. Besides a possible demonstration of the Constitution with creating a Classroom Constitution, there isn't a lot we can do to make something that happened so long ago relevant today. Students don't always understand it. But they should! Understanding our rights and freedoms is a responsibility that we have. So, I've done the hard work and teacher & kid-approved several videos to help you celebrate Constitution Day with your students!

Constitution Preamble-Schoolhouse Rock (2:45)

Who doesn't love Schoolhouse Rock? The catchy tune is one that students always memorize quickly and it never gets old. It's a short song that works great in transition time.

Liberty's Kids: We The People (23:17)

Have you ever heard of Liberty's Kids? They are seriously our favorite! It is like a social studies version of Magic School Bus. The kids love the consistency with characters through each episode. The series does an excellent job with historical accuracy in a way that students will easily understand and be drawn to. It is a longer episode, but worthwhile. Especially if you make them take notes like I usually do :)

Scholastic News Kid Reporters Interview the President (4:36)

In this excerpt, President Barack Obama tells kids why the U.S. Constitution is relevant today. He also shares which Founding Father he'd most like to meet. I personally like the connection between past and present. Another short one to squeeze in when you've got a few minutes!

The Making of the American Constitution-Judy Walton (3:57)

How did a meeting intended to revise the Articles of Confederation lead to the new Constitution for the United States? Watch this cartoon/graphics video to discover how a handful of men--sitting in sweltering heat and shrouded by secrecy--changed the course of history for America in 1787. A unique way to portray that information but still kid friendly & short!

I hope these videos help you to teach Constitution Day well this year. It is SO HARD to fit everything in, even when we try our best. Hopefully, you can use one or all of these resources in the next week to share with your students about our nation's history. Need other resources for the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and American Government? Check out these resources available in our Bow Tie Guy & Wife Store!
